Canvas Gradebook Checklist
1. Confirm assignments are included in final grade calculations
Verify all assignments and graded items are sent to the Gradebook. Anything that is graded and sent to the Gradebook will appear in the Assignments tool. This includes graded items coming from Quizzes, Discussions, and Roll Call Attendance. See our Canvas FAQs on external tool integrations. Icon tips: Assignments and Attendance use the paper-pencil icon, Quizzes have a rocket ship, and Discussions will display message bubbles.
If you are weighing the final grade based on Assignment Groups , make sure your groups are set to the correct percentages and your assignments are in their appropriate assignment groups. Remember that if you checked the “Do not count this assignment towards the final grade” setting on an assignment, it will not be counted. Unfortunately there is no quick way to check whether this was selected besides editing an individual assignment .
2. Verify all scores are entered
There are multiple ways to enter grades:
- Enter grades in Gradebook
- Set default grade on assignment for all students
- Time-saving tip! If most students will receive the same score, use this feature to apply the same score to all students and then go back and update the few students with different scores.
- Import grades through spreadsheet
- Use the SpeedGrader to grade individual submissions or use a rubric (see “Grade assignment” section)
- If needed, you can excuse a student from an assignment (see “Select Excused Status” section)
3. Apply score to ungraded items
After entering all scores, finish calculating grades by applying a score of 0 to ungraded items (or whatever score you wish to assign to all ungraded items) to avoid possible grade inflation, as the Gradebook only includes items with scores to calculate the course grade. This will place a “0” (or the score you entered) in all Gradebook cells that do not have a grade.
Note: Applying a score to ungraded items is irreversible. Please use caution.
4. Post grades to students
If needed, you can override a student’s final grade . Once all course grades are finalized, make sure the grades are posted to students. You may have had your Grade Posting Policy set to Manually Post Grades to students for all or individual assignments , in which case you must manually post those grades so your students can see them. Scroll through your Gradebook to see if the slashed eye icon appears for any assignment columns. If the slashed eye appears, move your cursor over the assignment name and click on the 3-dot icon, select Post grades, and click Post in the pop-up panel on the right.
Also confirm final course grades are visible to students by going to the course Settings. Hide totals in student grade summary should NOT be checked at the very bottom of the page.
5. Export & approve final grades for ConnectCarolina
The last step in Canvas is to export final grades, as they must be approved in ConnectCarolina . Click on the Export Final Grades for ConnectCarolina link in the top left of your Gradebook to open and save a spreadsheet that is formatted to be uploaded into ConnectCarolina. Then go to ConnectCarolina to upload the grades spreadsheet and approve final grades. See the Registrar’s documentation on grading . Remember you have 72 hours after the scheduled time of your final exam to approve grades in ConnectCarolina.
Good luck with finals!
