Car loaded down with moving boxes on top Welcome back! You have found our Summer 2023 blog series on making the transition from Sakai to Canvas. Throughout this series, our goal is to break down the major elements involved in switching over to Canvas, the University’s Learning Management System. This is the second blog in our series covering migration options. For help deciding whether migration is right for you, check out the first blog post in our series. If you’ve already decided that migration is right for you, read on!

What are my options?

If you are looking for an official registrar course you taught in Sakai during a 2022 term or Spring 2023, your course is already in Canvas waiting to be unpacked. Check your Canvas Dashboard or All Courses. The title will be labeled with ‘SAKAI_Archive,’ k16_Sakai_Archive,’ or ‘_k16.’ For example, you may see this format on your All Courses page: UNC101.01.SP23_SAKAI_Archive.

Use your archived material

Navigate to Courses on the left side of your screen and select the All Courses link. Any course with the title ‘SAKAI_Archive’, k16_Sakai_Archive,’ or ‘_k16’ are migrated versions of that course from Sakai. You can work directly within that course or you can request a development site and import parts or all of an archive course into the development course.

Do-it-Yourself Migration

The quickest way to get content from Sakai to Canvas is to Export Sakai Content Yourself and import that content into Canvas. Prior to completing the export, you will want to make sure you have a development or ‘Sandbox’ site. If you do not already have one of these types of sites, you can request a new site.

Migration Assistance

Additional migration assistance is available for Sakai sites that have not already been migrated and are being taught in future semesters. Requests are due by September 11, 2023, while migrated sites are estimated to be available in Canvas on November 20, 2023. If you have taught the same course multiple times, please note that you will only be allowed to request migration help for one iteration of that course. Be sure to request assistance with the most relevant course site as requests for subsequent course sites from the same course will be denied. Fill out this Additional Migration Request Form to get started!

Moving To-Do List

  • Check your Canvas Dashboard or All Courses to see if your course site has already been migrated. The site name will be appended with, ‘SAKAI_Archive.’
  • Decide whether you will export and import content yourself or if you’d like to fill out the form by September 11, 2023, for assistance.
  • For help determining if you need to go through the migration process, check out our first blog in this series about packing for Canvas.
